Hi, I’m Dave.

I build the infrastructure other teams depend on, and I still write the code

I live in London and I’m an engineering leader on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, the servers that run Apple Intelligence in the cloud while keeping your data private. Before that I spent ten years building Apple’s internal device cloud. Before that I helped a taxi app called Hailo rebuild itself in Go.

I started programming earlier than I can remember, first on ZX Spectrum, then writing BASIC for Acorn Archimedes machines. These days I write Go for work and, for fun, anything from dungeon crawlers for tiny computers to emulators that run the programs I wrote in 1992.

When I’m not at a keyboard, I’m probably outdoors with my Scout group.

Things I’ve made

Recent · Browser

RISCNet

Emulated Acorn RiscPCs, networked together over Econet, in your browser. I wrote a RiscPC emulator in JavaScript so the RISC OS programs I wrote as a teenager could run again. Claude helped me finish projects I first started in 1992.

2021 · BASIC Engine

Dungeon Death

A two-player dungeon crawler for the BASIC Engine, a tiny homebrew computer that boots straight into BASIC. It has pixel-art dungeons, potions, keys and a lot of dying, and a level editor to build more.

Recent · Browser

BASIC Engine Arcade

I built this to give the games I’ve written for the BASIC Engine over the years a proper home, somewhere to play them and read their source code. It’s an emulator of the BASIC Engine NG that follows the real firmware, running in your browser. Pick a game, such as Dungeon Death or its level editor, and press “View code” to see how it works. You can also boot to the BASIC prompt and type in your own. Game controllers work too.

1992 – 1996 · Acorn Archimedes

The RISC OS archive

In 2012 an old friend and mentor turned up a stash of software I wrote at school, aged about 12 to 16. I’ve started publishing it, with the original binaries plus detokenised BASIC source and sprites you can read on GitHub.

Reflecting on my time at Hailo

2013 – 2014 · Hailo

Hailo Tech Platform

As Hailo’s Chief Architect, I led the rebuild of its platform: small Go services on a message bus, running across AWS regions, so that independent teams could build things quickly and safely. I’m still proud of it, and surprised how well the fundamentals hold up today: embrace failure, make automated testing the safety net, and give teams freedom along with responsibility.

Message from Dave

Hello! You found the acorn.

As a teenager I wrote !Notify, which popped up messages like this one on other machines across the school network.
